Introduction
The Silas Project provides spiritual and financial support for mature Turkish believers in full-time Christian service within Turkey. It is a major activity of Firm Foundation Trust, which also publishes Turkish Christian books and DVDs in Turkey to help Christians there grow and mature. You can help through prayer and support.
Turkey is the most unreached nation in the world, with a population of over 70 million (25% under the age of 16). While there are sizable groups of ethnic Armenian, Greek, and Syriac Orthodox Christians, there are only 4,500 or so ethnic Turkish and Kurdish evangelical believers in the country. These believers can supply only partial local support for Christian workers.
What distinguishes the Silas Project from the activities of other Christian organisations in Turkey is the following.
- We support Turkish national workers - not missionaries or expatriate workers.
- Our aid is focussed on full-time workers in Turkish evangelical churches and Christian publishing work.
- The main ways we help are by sending money and encouraging prayer support.
- The money we send supplements local support - so that workers are not totally dependent on us.
- We do not set up our own structures but encourage local initiatives.
Ever more frequently, Turkish Christians desire to give their time and energy to building the church and spreading the Gospel within Turkey. Lack of ongoing financial support makes it very difficult for them to be full-time Christian workers. With your help we can enable them to do so. Most evangelical churches are very new, with little understanding of how to live out the Christian life in a secular Islamic country such as Turkey. Preaching, teaching, mentoring, and encouraging new believers, in small groups as well as in weekly services, is a big need. We know of many gifted Turkish men and women who wish to meet this need through full-time work. With your help we can offer assistance and enable them to be active in the way our Supported Workers are.
