Introduction
The Silas Project exists to support mature, proven Turkish men and women in their service to Christian activities within Turkey, through prayer and finance.
Ever more frequently, highly qualified Turkish Christian men and women want to give their full time and energy to building up the Church and spreading the Christian Gospel within Turkey. However, lack of continuing financial support makes it extremely difficult for them to function as full time Christian workers. The very small Christian community in Turkey cannot provide adequate local support.
Turkey is still the most unreached nation in the world, with a population of over 70 million (25% under the age of 16). Apart from Armenian, Greek, and Syriac Orthodox Churches, there are fewer than 3,000 Turkish evangelical Christian believers in the country.
Most evangelical churches are very new, with little understanding of how to live out the Christian life in a secular Islamic country such as Turkey. Preaching, teaching, mentoring, and encouraging new believers, in small groups as well as in weekly services, is a big need. We know of many gifted Turkish men and women who wish to meet this need through full-time work. With your help we can offer assistance and enable them to be active in the way our Supported Workers are.
The guidelines we use in determining who is supported are as follows.
- We maintain close consultation with both local Turkish Christian leaders and long term expatriates. These godly people have observed the person concerned - usually over a period of years.
- We look at the results of the person's work - while appreciating the difficulties of Christian work in Muslim lands. We evaluate the activities and effectiveness of each person under consideration.
- We look for faithfulness, integrity, and godly character in each case.

The trial of the five Turkish Muslim youths accused of the brutal murder of three Christian workers in Malatya last year had a confused opening. All five suspects claimed innocence and blamed the others. A joint cross examination has been set for 9 June - so far the accused have been questioned individually.
